MARTON RACES.

A NUMBER OF SURPRISES. TAME FOX AXD TINTORETTO BACK TO FORM. ONLY TWO STAND UP IN STEEPLES. The spring meeting of tbe Marton Jockey Club was concluded on Saturday in beautiful weather. There was a good attendance, and the racing was interesting throughout, though there were some surprises. Two old horses in Tintoretto and Tame Fox reproduced their form of years ago ana won races, the latter taking the big event. In the Steeples only two, The Curragh and Oneroa, stood up, and Handy, who was remounted, finished third. The totalisator handled £13.480, the figures for the two days being £30,060, as against £32,291 at the same meeting last year (held at Feilding).

The Raider Scatters Opponents. Fee Simple, a three-year-old gelding (trained by G. New, Awapuni), who was making his first appearance, was made a favourite far the Novice stakes, for which Aro de Val and Tea Time were scratched. Helotis carried about £170 less than Fee Simple, while Chrissarto was next in demand. Helotis was quickly in front, but was soon joined by The Raider, with Taurimu, Facia, Fee Simple, Mili Belle and Maul next. The Raider was first into the straight from Helotis, Fee Simple, Tcurimu, Mint Belle and Maui. Tbe Raider stayed on to win by four lengths from Tee Simple, who beat Helotis by half-a-lengtL. Then came Taurimu, Maui, Mint Belle, Facia and Trouble.

A Close Finish. All paraded for the Second Hack Hurdles. Peshwa carried about £120 more than Aratanra while Hangawera was next best backed. Arataura wus soon in charge and led past the stands from Hangawera. Break-o-day, Pe&hwa, Red Fuchsia and Mountain Top. Arataura was still the pilot along the back from Hangawera, INsshwa, Red Fuchsia and Ramblin' Kid. Arataura maintained bis position across the top and into the straight, with Hangawera and Red Fuchsia next, while Mountain Top had made up a lot of ground. Hangawera led iver the last Hurdle from P£a*\wa and Arataura, and then Peshwa joiw*d him. A great finish saw Hangawera get the decision by a head, with Arataura a length further back. Mountain Top, who came fast over the last bit, was fourth, followed by Red Fuchsia and Ramblin , Kid.

The Outsider Wins. With seratchings of Bank Note and Kotnak, only four were left to contest the Wairoma Hack Handicap. Town Bird was nearly twice as well backed as Volplane, with Kalos and Tanagra supported as named. Town Bird got the best of the start, and led along the back from Tanagra, with Kalos and Volplane together next. The order was the same across the top, except that Volplane had dropped back last. Tanagra was with Town Bird as they turned for home, and then took chargeHe easily held off Kalos to win by three lengths. Town Bird was five lengths further back, with Volplane last.

Tame Fox Returns to Form. Anolo was the only scratching for the Heaton Park Handicap. Mint Leaf, who is a stable companion of Royal Mint and was not started in the Marton Handicap on the first day, which was won by Royal Mint, was favourite, but he only carried a "fiver" more than Nukumai, while Tresham was next best backed, the others being at good prices. As they went out of the straight, Eden Hall, Nukumai, Tame Fox, Tresham, and Star Area were the most prominent. Star Area then rushed to the front, with Tame Fox, Eden Hall, Te Monanui, Nukumai and Mint Leaf following. Star Area led across the top from Tame Fox, Eden Hall, Mint Leaf, Tresham, Brigadier Bill, Te Monanui, Nukumai, and Mount Marta. Star Area was done with before the bend was reached, and Tame Fox and Mint Leaf led into the straight from Eden Hall, Tresham, Te Monanui and Brigadier Bill. Tanje Fox drew out and Tresham put in his claim, a good finish seeing Tame Fox win by third. Brigadier Bill, Te Monanui, a head, with Mint Leaf a length away. Mount Marta, Eden Hall, Star Area, and Nukumai were next. Several seasons ago Tame Fox used to be a good horse in bad ground, but he is getting on in years, and his win today, though he ran a good race yesterday, was not generally anticipated.

Only Two Jump Safely. All paraded for the Hack Steeplechase, and Jovial was entrusted with about £130 more than Handy, with Hokioi next best backed. Only two got round safely, The Curragh and Oneroa. The former won by 30 yards. At the first fence of the double Handy was nearly down, and Hokioi and Taitaiata came to grief. Jovial went at the fence near the fivefurlong post, and The Curragh led past the stands the second time from Handy, Oneroa, and Ruby Ring. The first fence of the double saw Ruby Ring fall The Curragh drew out along the back from Oneroa and Handy. At the fence which had brought Jovial down, Handy also fell. The Curragh won as stated, and Handy, who was remounted, finished a long way back, third.

After Many Years. All the acceptors went to the post for the Ladies' Bracelet. Koauau was the popular pick, but only carried about £25 more than Tintoretto, with Radiate next fancied. Risk and Lady Faye led along the back from Hautawa. Radiate, Koauau and Tintoretto. Radiate then went to the front, and across the top was attended by Tintoretto, Lady Faye, dnd Koauau. Tintoretto and Lady Faye were first to turn for home from Koauau and Radiate. Tintoretto went on to beat Koauau by. a length, with Radiate six lengths further back, while Lady Faye and Risk were next. The winner was given away to F. Weston, the Ellcrslie trainer, some seasons ago, and recently he sold him to F. Davis (trainer to Mr. T. H. Lowry). This is the first race he has won for a long time.

A Dead-heat The four acceptors went to the post for the Telegraph Handicap, and Huikai was made a solid favourite, being entrusted with about £300 more than Royal Land, while Miss Hupana was next best backed. The quartet raced in a line for half a furlong, and then Starboard Light drew out, with Huikai next. Crossing the top Huikai moved up to Starboard Light and was with him at the turn. Half way down the straight Huikai looked to have the race in hand, but Starboard Light came again, and they went past the post together, the judge being unable to separate them. Royal Land was four lengths away, third.

The Concluding Event. Seven paraded for the Farewell Handicap, with which the programme concluded. Anok> was favourite, with about £180 more than Te Kawana, with Butterscotch next fancied. Rarakau and Athenry carried on the running most of the way, and Athenry and Anolo were first into the straight from Te Kawana. Athenry won by a length from Anolo, with Te Kawana six lengths back. Boy was fourth.
