LOCAL BODIES BUSES. EXEMPT nU>K UCEMSE FEHL "FIRST I'VE HEARD OF IT," SAYS THK MINISTER. {By Telegraph. — Parliamentary Beporter.j WELLINGTON, Friday. A persistent man is Mr. A. Harris, member for Waitemata. Three times during this evening he attempted to ruse the question of exemption of motor omnibuses owned by public bodies from payment of the annual license fee of £5, which all privately owned buses were compelled to pay. On each occasion the Chamnan of Committees ruled him out of order, since the items in the Estimates selected by Mr. 'Harris did not allow of the point being raised. Mr. Harris declared that he wopld not be satisfied till he got an answer, and just before midnight, when the vote for public buildings was reached, he raised the point again. Under - what legislative authority did the Publie Works authority grant this exemption? be asked It was unfair that motor buses running in the outside areas should have to pay this heavy traffic fee, while the Auckland City Council was exempt.

Hon. gentleman : should have seen the Minister. ] Mr. Harris: Oh, but I haws raised the : matter before and have had no reply. Mr. Coates: Can you tell me when a single local body has complained! Mr. Harris: Yes, the Mount Eden Borough CoundL Mr. Coates: That complaint has never readied me. Mr. Harris: That may be, hut they have communicated with me, and they felt so strongly about it that they called a meeting, at which several Auckland members, including myself, the members for Boakffl Manukau and Auckland Central were present. Mr. Coates said that It was a matter for the Minister. The Hon. K. Williams, Minister of Public Works, row to My that this was the first he had'heard of the matter. He would be glad to get information, as ha did not know anything about it.
