British Athletes Beat German
LORD BUBGHLEY AGAIN. BERLIN, September 2. At an athletic sports meeting in Magdeburg the Achilles Club (Britain), which is on a tour of Germany, won the majority of the events <«gainst the German cracks. G. M. Butler defeated Wege in the 200 metres race in 22 l-sa. Lord Burghley defeated Trees bach, the German champion, in the 110 metres hurdles, in 15s. Buchner defeated D. 8. A. Lowe in the 400 metres, in 48 l-ss, a German record. SCULLING RACE. BABBY QUIETLY CONFIDENT. VANCOUVER, September 2. In connection with the race for the world's sculling championship, Goodsell and Barry, with the judge and other officials, and representatives of the Press, will visit the course to-day to confirm the regulations and arrangements for the race. The men have practically finished their training. Barry is quietly confident of success, and both men have many supporters. The weather is improving, after rain. AUSTRALIAN GOLF. MELBOURNE, September 2. Rufus Stewart (South Australia) won the Australian open golf championship, defeating H. Sinclair (New South Wales). COUNTY CRICKET. LANCASHIRE WINS AGAIN. (Received 130 p.m.) LONDON, September 2. Nottingham's hope of winning the county cricket championship from Lancashire this year has been spoiled by their unexpected defeat by Glamorgan who won their only match of the season this morning by beating the champions by an innings and 81 runs. As a result of the surprising defeat of Notts the championship is still held by Lancashire. The leading county championship figures are:—Lancashire, played 2S, won 10, lost one. Won 11 on the first innings, lost five. One game was without result. Out of a possible of 224 points they obtained 154, a percentage of 88.75.
Notts played 28, won 12, lost 3. Won eight on the first innings, and lost four. One game had no result. Ont of the possible they obtained 152,. an average of 67.86.
Yorkshire, who are third, played 27 games, winning 10 and losing seven. On first innings results they won five and lost six. These games were without result. Oat of a possible of 216 they obtained 135, a percentage of 82-54.
Kent were fourth with a percentage of 62.01; Derby fifth, 61.87; Surrey sixth, 60.79; Glamorgan were fifteenth with 31.11, and Worcester seventeenth, 18J5L
The Players In their game with the Gentlemen scored 561 for six wickets, and declared. The Gentlemen made 199, and were beaten by an inwiwg. and 81 runs.
Sussex m their first innings scored 317 (J. Parks 74), H. Parks 54;, and in their second 111.
Nicholls took four wickets for 44 and four for 32. Essex, in their first innings, made 411 (Cutmore 72, O'Connor 62, Russell 110, Franklin 60 not out), and in their second 18 for no wickets. Essex won by ten wickets.
For Marylebooa Douglas obtained 101 not out. They scored 199. Robinson took fire wickets for 37. Their second strike realised 147, A. E. Gilligan, 51 not out. Macaulay took seven for 76. Yorkshire scored 212 In their first innings, Gay taking four wickets for 32, and in their second 138 for two wickets, Holmes 69 not out and Kilner 51 not out. Yorkshire won by eight! wickets.
Notts were dismissed for 233, Ryan taking five wickets for 81, and in their second innings 61. Mercer took six for 31 and Ryan four for 14. Glamorgan scored 375 (Bates 163). Richmond took five wickets for 102. Glamorgan won Sr an innings and 81 runs.—(A. and JL and "Sydney Ban.")
