NEW ZEALAND FLAX.
A PLANTERS' FEDERATION. •
With the object of furthering the flax planting industry in New Zealand, a Dominion Flax Planters' Federation is to be formed shortly. This decision was arrived at by a meeting of flax planting companies held at Auckland this week. Seven large flax-planting companies, with a total capital of £899,000, were represented at the meeting, at which Mr. H. G. Milburn presided. Mr. W. Petrie, chief Government hemp-grader, was also present. Mr. Milburn quoted figures to show that the export of New Zealand flax fibre had fteadily increased since 1921, and mentioned ways by which the usee of the fibre could be extended. Mr. Petrie, in the course of his address, said that he was. of the opinion that an association or organisation such as was proposed, would be of the greatest benefit to the indqstry. He stressed the importance of producing as much binder twine quality as possible and of aiming at a good standard. A sub-committee was set up to confer with the Department of Agriculture with the object of obtaining the Government's help and assistance in further experimental work."
