FRIEND OF KINGS.
33 Years* Close Association With Royalty. DEATH OF COUKT KECOEDHL (Reef 1 Ted 2 p.m.) LONDON, August 18.
A life of 33 years of dose association with Royalty closed through tbe death of Mr. George Smith, aged 64, as the immediate result of a motoring accident. Every newspaper announcement from Buckingham Palace cam* to tbe Press Association in London through Mr. Smith, and was then distributed throughout England by the newspapers. It was a unique journalistic position, giving him an intimate knowledge of Royalty. The King and Queen had a soft spot in their hearts for this working newspaper man, who was entrusted with the record of their public engagements. King Edward, too, was specially fond of him. On one occasion Mr. Smith quietly slipped a sovereign into King Edward's hand when His Majesty wanted to buy a buttonhole t from a charity flower seller, but suddently discovered he had no money.
