BOXING THRILLS.
N.Z. AMATEUR TITLES. THREE AUCKLANDERS BEATEN BUT THREE LEFT IN. SLATTERY AND PEARCEY OUT. (By Telegraph.—Soeoial to "Star.") INVERCARGILL, this day.
The semi-finals and third rounds of the New Zealand amateur boxing championships at Invercargill last evening contained a number of exciting incidents, as well as several surprises. Probably the most unexpected event ■was the defeat of T. Slattety, the Auckland representative, in the semi-final of the lightweight division, by A. Jones, of Southland. The bout opened with a spell of cautious sparring, after which Jones sailed in and drummed Slattery's *ibs at short range, besides connecting several times to the jaw. Slattery, in reply, jarred the Southlander 'with three well-timed lefts. The crowd became greatly excited when it was seen that Jones, in subsequent rounds, had the Aucklander's measure, and a roar of applause went up when Jones caught his man on the point of the jaw and sent him to the canvas for nine. This was in the third round, and Slattery seemed very sick on getting up, and he had no sooner pulled himself together than the Southlander slammed home a short arm blow which sent him down again. The referee, Earl Stewart, immediately declared Jones the winner. Another exciting contest was seen in the heavyweight class when J. G. Leckie, of Otago, defeated P. McCarthny, of Auckland. McCarthy forced the fight at the start, but Leckie soon quietened him with a series of smashing lefts full in the mouth. In the second round Leckie got home a powerful drive to the jaw, and the Aucklander war just sagging to the floor when the savel him. He recovered towards the finish of the bout, and made an ugly rus,h which the Otago man beat off." The issue was never in doubt, and Ler-kie got the verdict with a good margin of points. In the flyweight match S. Pur ton, of Greymouth, proved himself superior to F. Pearcy, the Northern boxing representative. Pearcy was here, there and everywhere, like a will-of-tbe-wisp, but Purton's left got home time and again. As an exhibition of boxing science, particularly in the departments of slipping, guarding, and ducking, the bout was one of the best of the evening. Armishaw and Hogg do Well. E. Armishaw, of Auckland, was the winner of the Bemi-final in the welterweight division, cleverly outpointing P. J. Stone after a rather unexciting bout. The opening round was even, but as the fight proceeded Armishaw definitely outclassed his opponent. Light-heavyweight, A. Hogg, of Auckland, knocked out C. Spencer, of Bluff, in the second round of a very interesting contest. Spencer, whose footwork. was beautiful, darted in and scored several times, but the wiry Aucklander was able to take all the punishment he could give, and retaliated by driving him to the ropes under a rain of blows. Finally Hogg connected to the jaw, and sent the Bluff boxer to the floor for nine. On scrambling to his feet again he received a further blow and took full count. Results Detailed. Flyweights.—S.
