PAKURANGA MEETING.
AT ELLERSLIE TO-MORROW. LOCAL XACING SEASOH OPENS. THE PROGRAMME REVIEWED.
The racing season for 1927-28 will be ushered in in Auckland to-morrow with the annual meeting of the Pakrrranga Hunt Club, which will be held at ETlersHe. This is usually a most popular meeting, and with the good fields engaged and fine weather conditions, rt should be well up to the standard of its predecessors. Owing to recent rain the course is sure to be on the heavy side, but nevertheless the racing should be interesting. The Maiden Hosiers. The programme will open at 11.37 a.m. with the Greenmount Hunters' Steeplechase. The scratching of ilaara . leaves a field of seven. Wiltshire has lhad some hurdling experience and shaped very fair*▼ over the big fences on the •3at at Elieralie yesterday morning. Sea Comet was third in the Hunters' Handij .'ap Steeplechase, about two miles, at .he Taranaki Hunt Club's meeting last ieason, and later finished second in the Maiden Hunters' Steeplechase at the vSaikato Hunt meeting. Glenlight showed some pace and jumping ability at the recent Great Northern meeting, ishila Four Feathers, who is owned by Mr. A. G. Quart ley, Nokutere, the property of Mr. IL. Hannon, and Hauturu. who belongs to iir. L. H. Pangley, are unknown quantities. Del Sarto is Jne of R. Hatch's team, and raced .lnsuccessfully on the flat. Hauturu went nicely over the big fences on the ■lat at Ellerslie yesterday morning 'robably most money will go on SEA COMET, WILTSHIRE, GLENLIGHT. Another Henters' Event. The Hunters' Hurdle Race ha.« at--raeted a dozen acceptors, and Just ohn heads the handicap. He is a fairly jood sort, winning the Hunters' Hurdles, wo miles, at the last Great Northern nee ting, and finishing third in the hrakei Hurdles, one mile and threequarters, on the third day, though he vas a long way behind the winner, . and the second horse, 'otoanuL Ramblin' Kid was second to Tust John in the Hunt Club Hurdles at merslie, only being beaten by a neck, le waa giving Just John 71b, and is
now in reeeipt of 61b. At the recent Wellington meeting Bamblin' Kid led into -he straight in the Talavera Hurdles ine mile and a half, and then faded out. that race should do him good. Fair Abbey was third to the pair first mentioned at Ellerslie. Lady Acre showed !up in hurdle events at Wanganui in Slay last without getting into the money. 'Royal Bonus, if he stays, and Mangani may be the best of the others. When the machine closes most money may be invested on RA3IBLDT KID, JUST JOHN, FAIR ABBEY. Finding Probable Stayers. The Sylvia Park Handicap is a mile and a quarter hack event for horses that have not won a race of a greater distance than seven furlongs. Bright Dawn won np to seven furlongs at Takapuna. and has been second in a mile at the Waikato meeting. Festina Lente won three seven-furlong races last season— two at Whangarei and one at Thames — and she was third in the Mount Roskill Handicap, one mile, at the Avondale , meeting, to Tinakoa and Town
Guard, while she also occupied a similar position to Delightment and Tinokoa at Te Rapa over seven furlongs. Killnte has won up to seven furlongs, while Red Comet has scored over six furlongs. Acushla ran a great race in the Great Northern Oaks, one mile and a half, leading till well into the straight. She has only got to repeat that form to be hard to dispose of. The public may entrust most money to ACUSHLA, FESTIXA LEXTE, BRIGHT DAWN. Tie Big Flat Event. The Jellicoe Handicap is the big flat event of the day. Te Kara, who has pride of place, has not been badly treated with 11.7, seeing he was fourth in the Cornwall Handicap, with 10.fi on a stone lower minimum, and occupied a similar position with IL4 in the York Handicap on the same scale of weights as he is now handicapped on. Desert Glow has been off the scene for some time, but if right is pretty useful at a mile and a-quarter. Master Doon (10.5) raced well at the Anckland meeting, finishing third in the Cornwall Handicap and winning the York Handicap. At Wellington he was third in the Parliamentary Handicap, with 10.2, and second in the Winter Oat 3. one mile, carrying 10.4. He likes the mud, and has been going well in his ! work at Ellerslie since then. Delightment may find the distance a bit too far for him, but he looks well. Llandudno last season won a mile event at Te Kuiti, and at the last Great Northern
meeting was second in the Cornwall Handicap and won the Carbine Plate. Queen Arch ran second in the Whyte Memorial (one mile) to Nukumai at the recent Wellington winter fixture, but failed to show np in the Parliamentary Handicap. Of the others, Golden Krist. Tinoiti, and Queen Emerald may be most in request. Probably the most fancied trio will he MASTER DOON. LLANDUDNO, TE KARA. The Hunt Cup. Ten are engaged in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup (steeplechase ). A season or two ago Hypothesis wa- a good r chaser, winning the event in 19*25, and aL-o performing well in other events over the big timber. Pendaries annexed the Hunt Club Cup at Last June in good style, but he ha- now an extra 141b to carrv. Stonewall ran second
Last year to Bean Cavalier, and EafFerty has not raced, for a long time, but in 1923 he annexed the Maid.mi Hunters' Steeplechase and the Waikato Hujit Club Cup in one day. He is pretty -well just now. Arsene Lupin has been training well at Te Aroha. and of the others Sea Comet and Glenlight may command most respect. The public mav periiaus fancy PEXDAVIES, rafferty. HYPOSTHESIS. The Aacklssd Handicap. Twenty-three are carded for the Auckland Handicap, and several have engagements in previous races. Catapult performed fairly well last season, while Red Comet won a double at the Bay of Plenty meeting, and scored at Te Rar-a, but has not done much for a long time past. Acushla. if reserved for this event, will have some friends. Probably most money will go on CATAPULT, ACUSHLA. RED COMET. The Bracelet. Several who are in the Ladies' Bracelet have prior engagements during the Jay, and probably much will depend on liow they shape earlier as to how they are fantied- Probably the public may select CLOCKWORK, FAIR ABBEY, QLTN'VARDIA. The Concluding Event. The Dunedin Handicap will conclude the programme. Eden Hall has not raced for some time, bnt both Deliglrtaaent and King Lu scored at Trent-ham 'ast month. Day Guard is a useful sort, nnd Le Choucas, who will be bracketed
•vitli Eden Hall, was unlucky during his recent trip to Australia. Town Guard proved a good horse la.~t season, as <iid Tinokoa. while Sir Archie showed that he could run a very useful six furlongs. Investors may perhaps fancy TOWN GUARD, DELIGHTMENT. SIR ARCHIE. ELLERSLIE TRACK WORK. Owing to the weather conditions the sand and hurdle tracks were the only ones available this morning, and there was very little work of interest done. On the Sand. Whaka King beat Fiery over four furlongs, which they traversed in 53 1 -ss. Bright Dawn ran six: furlongs. taking 1.2< 2-5, but was not hurried at any ?tage of the journey. Jumpers. Nukutere (Rennie) and Hypothesis (Baker) were companions over lour hurdles, both horses jumping well, although Nukutere fenced rather high. , _ Town Hall (Thompson) negotiated four hurdles safely. He jumped very carefully. Arrivals. The following horses have arrived at Ellerslie to fulfil engagements at the I'akuranza meeting; To Kara. Davguard. Red Comet, Whaka King. Town Hall, Hypothesis, Llandudno, Bright Dawn, j Tinokoa, Tinoiti, Nukutere. Captain : Cobham and Prince Lupin.
