Heavy storms occurred last night and continued to-day in many parts of the district. Torrential rains fell at Barrow-tn-Furness, where 2.43 inches -were registered. Much damage to property was done and Iram and bus services were delayed in Eden Valley, Cumberland, and both railway lines between Carlisle and Appelby Road were blocked owing to a small landslide. Traffic to Scotland had to be diverted while south coast of England resort* have been swept by heavy seas. VIOLENT STORM. GREAT DAMAGE IN FRANCE. (Received 10.30 a.m.) PARIS, August 15. A violent storm in the Saone-et-Loire district caused damage estimated at from 10,000,000 to 15,000,000 francs. Crops were destroyed, cattle killed, woods uprooted and roads blocked. There will be thousands of unemployed in textile trades, owing to the damage.
