MANUKAU COUNCIL'S DIFFICULTY. HARD PUT TO KEEP OUR MEN ENGAGED. QUESTION OF RELIEF WORKS. "It is taking ua all our time to keep our own men employed during * the winter months," .-aid Mr. J. S. Dickson at to-day's ' meeting of the Manukau County Council, wben qualifying a decision to receive a communication from the Department of Labour asking for particulars as to the number of men employed, or it was proposed to employ on relief works, to assist in the alleviation of unemployment. The chairman (Mr. F. M. Waters): That is m>: The possibility of proceeding with the Maugcre bridge undertaking, and bituminUing the Favona Road—a main outlet between Manger© and Otahuhu—was briefly discussed. The bitter suggestion was put forward by Mr. S. XL House. The engineer (Mr. J. R. Page): You will have to wait till the summer arrives. By then the unemployment position will be set aside I hope. We cannot do biturainising work at this time of the year. Mr. House: No, but we can get the metal ready. The chairman said that money could bo raised for the- work without eon- . lilting the ratepayers. Personally, however, he did not like tho principle. Another councillor said that only a small number of men would be cmployed on the work, and iio did not think it was worth wasting time over. Further discussion on the subject lapsed, and the letter was received.
