August 20—20-Mile Handicap, Mangere & 27 -~ From Mangere to Papakura and 06 lT MUeS)> AUCkland R ° ad
The weather was very bad last Saturday, and the race had to be put off for naif an hour. However, 15 competitors braved the elements, ami the limit men, Dean and Rhodes, were sent away about winner was Francis, of Papa-kui-a. He rodfe a good heady, race, and woir pretty easily from Pelham, with Rhodes a handy third. The winner has been knocking at the door the last three weeks, and his win on Saturday should spur him on to further success. Harry Pelham was not at his best in the heavy going, and has'put up much better performances this season.
Rhodee rode his best race this season. He seems to shine in heavy going, and he should do well in the big event. Dean rode his best race to date, and was unlucky in not getting placed. Storev, although well treated by the handicapper, was an interested onlooker only. Perhaps he has gathered enough plums to last him the season. At least one competitor could have done with his help on Saturday.
In the sprint for the line anion* the baek-markers, White won by several lengths from Sutherland, with Prior 30 yards back, third. White gained time honours with 37m 10s. Considering the weather conditions, the time was vei#r good. Mathieson found the heavy going no good, and pulled out after going one circuit.
Henderson sets off each Saturday at a terrific speed, but generally calms down after doing a lap. If he could go the entire journey the same speed, he would be a world's champion. Henderson has yet to learn that a race is won. at '.the finish, and not by trying to turn every • competitor off. He will find there are. dozens of riders who can sit with him the entire journey and lick-him at the finish.
Ken Rae and Stansfleld put jup a good ride. They had not, however, got over their trip back from Hamilton.
White is riding brilliantly at present, and has put up some phenomenal times around the Mangere circuit. He is a niost unselfish rider, a real. good sport and is by far the best at present competing in. Auckland. How he will fare in the" coming 100-mile event remains to be seen, but "Pedal" is sure he will hold his own. 'Putty's" father is also a keen supporter of the club, and is present each Saturday to help the game along.
At present there are no indications of any local cyclists making the trip to the road race. Fred Bowes is training hard again, and will b< a starter next week. When in form, Bowes takes some heading off.
