RUGBY FOOTBALL.
"COLLEGE" DAY GAMES.
LAST SATURDAY'S PLAY
NOT IS AND COMMENTS
Tlx* chief excitement in Rugbv foot--I'iitl in lli.> •• it v next Saturday will be ••College |)jiy" paries, when the matches will Kings v. (Jrnminar, Sacred Heart v . Mt. Albert, and St. Stephen's v. Cr.'immar 15. It is also possible that the programme may include a match between North Shore nnd City to find whether the latter team can win a place in the Senior A section.
Auckland senior Rugby had an excellent. record on Saturday, in that it put three representative teams in the field and registered three wins. South Canterbury .vas defeated ."12—(5, South Auckland went down :?2—5, and Thames lost to the third Auckland side by 1(5 points to 11.
Next Saturday Auckland will have two rep. teams in the field — one against Turanaki at New Plymouth and the other against Northern AVairoa at Dargaville. The former will leave town by char-a-banc on Thursday at f> p.m. and the latter by the Helensville train on Friday afternoon.
Tho game between Auckland and Thames on Saturday was very c' scly contested. At half-time Thames led by II points to 8, but in the second half the open play of the Auckland backs, who combined well, turned the scale in favour of the visitors, enabling them to score two tries, one of which was con* verted. Two of the outstanding forwards for the winners were the young Grammar players, Potter and Schnauer.
It was a noticeable characteristic of tho Auckland South Auckland game on Saturday that the Southerners, quite puzzled by the inter-passing of the Auckland backs and forwards in the first spell, quickly copied the local methods in the second half and showed to much better advantage. Individually the visitors had nothing to be ashamed of in' their Hhowing, and once they master the knack of sending their passes along crisply and learn to time their passes for ju*t the instant before an opponent launches his tackle they will become a good match for the Auckland B team. The difference between the two teams in the second half wai chiefly that between a sharp and confident attack and one that was delayed by slow passes.
In a seven-aside tourney on Saturday at Raetihi the senior competition was won by United A, the junior by Haetihi B, and the thirds by United A. The schools' competition was won by Kaetihi A.
A match between Opotiki (challengers) and Fangitaiki (holders) for the Apantii Memorial Shield on Saturday resulted in a draw, 6 all. Rangitaiki's six points, which saved them the shield, were scored in the last ten minutes.
The final match of the Senior B grade on Saturday, July 30, between Munukau and City, resulted in a win for Manukau by 6 points to nil, not 5 points to 3, as previously reported. Tramways had a good win by 10 to 0 over Suburbs on Saturday In the Senior B grade. Sly kicked two penalty goals for Suburbs, while for Tramways Howell potted a goal and Warren and Xorden scored a try each. Otago's football is inconsistent. At Tnvercargill on Wednesday week Otago defeated the home team by 27 points to 0, and in a return game at Dunedin on Saturday the Southlanders turned the tables, winning by 17 to 0. Reports of the game indicate that the Southland forwards dominated the game at Dunedin.
Len Rlghton, who has been for eleven years secretary of the Ponsonby Club, was the recipient of a complimentary social and dapee at the Point Eri.i Park kiosk by th* club members and friends just prior to his recent marriage. Though it was. essentially a " Ponnonby night," the ballroom and supper tablet being decked out in the colours of the champion club, whose traditions nad been so worthily upheld on playing
field and in execut iv« councils by the guest of the evening, there were many representative*) of other clubs pres'ent to pay their respects to I>en and his prospective bride. The sentiments of the club members were linppily expressed by Mr. G. Nicholson in handing over to I>en a handsome presentation from football friends and comrades.
