BOWLING.

SATURDAY'S PROGRAMME. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By TRI'NDLER.) 'I lie Carlton holders of the Edwin Stars shook otF rather easily a challenge from Devonport hist Saturday. The challengers next Saturday are from Rocky Nook, the team being: W. H. •Tenkin, C. L. Gladding, H. Jenkin, H. C. Clarke, following them are Onehunga, Mount Albert, Stanley, Epsom, West End and Edendale.

The weather last Wednesday made it quite impossible to play the usual weekly match for the Denison Pins, but Mount Eden will play the West End holders this week, if the weather permits. Roekv Xook are holding a full-rink tournament on Wednesday, and can accommodate twelve teams! There is still room for two or three more entries.

Last Wednesday the new president, Mr. R. Eagleton, called a special general meeting of the club, to consider measures for the progress of the club. Most people who meet members of this club in tournaments have doubtless gathered the impression that they are making quite enough progress already.

Saturday evening the centre executive were the guests of the Devonport Orphans' Club, the president of the centre, Mr. J. Pascoe, being very appropriately in the chair. Naturally, the bowlers met with a very cordial reception, and the Dominion president, Mr. .1. W. Hardley, responded with one of the finest addresses he has ever given. Among the other speakers of the evening was Mr. A. Whytc, president of the Otahuhu Orphans' Club, and as a member of the new bowling club at Mangere he centred his address on the Easter tournament, in which the tirst-year players of Mangere were the runnersup. His vision of the final, where they were defeated by Devonport, hardly agreed in all respects with the notes on the same match which appeared in the eight o'clock edition last Saturday, but probably no match ever appeals to two spectators exactly in the same way. Next Monday there is to be a special meeting of delegates to the centre, to record their votes for the North Island members of the Dominion council. As the new North Auckland centre just formed does not really come into being till August 1, it would be just as well for tile nine clubs in question and also their delegates, to ascertain the exact position, for otherwise they will be disfranchised, so far as this jrarticular election is concerned. The meeting is to be held in the Roekv Nook pavilion, and as there is not much business to be carried out except the election the centre executive will entertain the delegates at a social for the rest of the evening.

The Fiji Tournament. Xo information has come to hand regarding the success of the two New Zealand rinks who went to Fiji a fortnight ago, so the presumption is, that they did not win the Pacific pennant. This is the third time the New Zealand bowlers have competed with Australians fin this neutral green, and their continued want of success will hardly impress the visitors from the Commonwealth with the playing capacity of our representatives. However, there is plenty of time to redeem the reputation gained in l!)2.'f, when a moderately strong touring team easily held their own in Xew Smith Wales and went through Queensland without a loss. It will only be necessary to send a really representative team to Melbourne next Christmas, and a fair amount of success should be achieved. Jll the meantime four Southern bowlers arc spending the winter in Queensland, Messrs. Geo. and J. C. Kedmond, (J. McGill and E. Cheel, and, according to advices received last week they have won six representative matches out of eight. In Brisbane they had the good fortune to meet a touring team from \ ictoria and also a special railway team from the same State, so they took the opportunity to further the scheme fur playing regular matches between the two countries. As the first is to be at Melbourne, the Victorian tourists took it up very heartily and promised that any competitors from New Zealand can be assured of a really enjoyable time.

It is expected that a party of Victorian competitors will return from Fiji l>y the Aorangi, in which ease they should be in Auckland this day four weeks. No doubt the probable competitors at Melbourne will be glad to meet them here if a match could be arranged for the afternoon.

A Melbourne paper states that the match committee of the V.H.A. selected tin following two rinks to represent Victoria in the Pacific pennant:—J. \V. Watt and F. Booth (St. Kilda), T. Henderson (Surry Hills), W. H. Cooper (Middle Park); J. Florant (Kew), W. Butler (Brighton Beach), H. Stranaghan (Port Melbourne), J. Pilbeam (M.C.C.) Some of these were in the party who called here a fortnight ago, and it will be interesting to learn how they fared. There was no necessity to do any selecting in regard to the New Zealand team, for only two rinks made the trip.
