PARNELL ELECTORATE.
\ LICENSING DIFFICULTY. RACECOURSES AFFECTED. PETITION TO COMMISSION". (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON", Monday. A petition ha> been placed before the j North Island Representation Commission, now sitting in Wellington, asking that reconsideration be given to the i boundaries of the Parnell electorate. - The new boundaries fixed by the eom- . mission have not affected any of the hotel licenses in that district, as the hotels have been left in local area< where license is still in force. Within 1 the new Parnell electorate, however, » there is not a single hotel, and. conso- ; quently. there is no nece*ity for the • appointment of a Li-censing Committee. The question has arisen. what ' authority is there to grant the temporI ary booth licenses for the races at ■ Ellerslie and the trotting meetings at . Alexandra Park, which are in ; nell electorate, since there will be no ; Licensing Committee in charse of the ' area concerned 1 A decision by the commission to adhere strictly to the new boundaries which it has fixed will mean that these . meetings in future will have to be . "dry." To overcome the difficulty it ha- been 1 suggested that a -light alteration in the ! boundary in Newmarket should be ma.le : so that the Royal George Hotel will bw ■ left in the electorate. The existence of ' even one . hotel will necessitate the ; appointment of a Licensing Committee , and tins committee will have the . authority required to issue the tempor- ■ ary permits for the racecourse booth.
