SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
The St. Barnabas' Young Men's Bible Class held a very successful fancy dress ball in the parish hall on Thursday evening. Prizes for the most original fancy dresses were awarded to: Checker cab (Miss Joan Croft) 1, Dutch girl (Miss Greensmith) 2, shepherdess (Miss Auld) 3. Grandma (Mr. Jack Walton) 1, modern flapper (Mr. Keith McKerras) 2, Tom Mix (Mr. Sydney Carter) 3. * • * • A successfulu social and dance was held last Wednesday by the Auckland division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade in St. Sepulchre Hall, Khyber Pass. Tha Port Auckland Band supplied a first-class programme of music voluntarily, and the following artists were also much appreciated. Mr. Lou Bickerton, accompanied by Mr. Frank Willonghby, gave a comic solo, the Misses Stevens a vocal duet, Mr. J. Kelson a musical saw, and the Army AR.C. girls and Mr. W. Cummings also contributed items. The programme was organised and carried out under the capable leadership of Mr. H. Turner, assisted by Mr. N. Allport. The proceeds of the evening will be used to purchase uniforms for new members, and it was gratifying to the promoters to receive such whole-hearted auoport from t'jc pu'>ii<\
An enjoyable evening was given by the committee of the sub-branch of the NavyLeague to Warrant Officer R. Chapman and Mrs. Chapman on Tuesday last, on the occasion of their departure for England next month. The hall was prettily decorated with fern and pink roses, and there were cards and dancing during the evening. Warrant Officer R. Chapman and Mrs. Chapman were the recipients of a beautiful New Zealand rug, Mhich was presented by the president, Mrs. R. L. Cleland, on behalf of the committee. * * * * A charming afternoon was spent by a bridge party yesterday at the Lyceum Club, when Mrs. George Devore entertained friends to say farewell to Mrs. Rossiter, who is leaving for England in about a fortnight. Amongst the guests were Mesdames Maguire, Murray, Allan, Moody, Devore, senior, Hunt, Williams, Matthews, Yates, Cameron, Morrah, Dransfield, Meredith, Tiarks, C. B. Rossiter, Maben, Casement Aickin, Griffen, Luxford and Bulk • • • • The gardening circle of the Lyceum, which will hold an open afternoon next Tuesday, when Mr. A. Brown, A.RJ.B.A., A.N.Z.I A., will address the members on the subject of garden designing from an architectural point of view, a very necessary subject in a town where the large house is so often seen planted on a tiny section, laid out in a manner that makes it so much smaller, and whose lines of decoration are so rarely in sympathy with those of the building which it is supposed to adorn. The members will be shown a series of illuminated pictures of beautiful gardens, from which to gain ideas of how to arrange their home grounds to better advantage.
