ATHLETICS.
WANGANUI'S ONE REP.
(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star/') WANG A XL'I, this day. It was hoped that the West Coast of the North Island would be represented at the New Zealand cross-country championships by strong teams, but owing to various reasons the only competitor from this coast will* be Clarrie Gibbons, of Marton, who is a member of the Wanganui Harrier Club. Gibbons' won the test race held last Saturday very easily, and is in splendid form. It will bo remembered that. Gibbons finished lirst in the mile race at the New Zealand amateur championship meeting at Auckland in February, but J. W. Savidan was placed lirst. owing to a collision in the straight. This pair will meet again next ►Saturday, ami it will be interesting to see how they fare. ,T. Pawson, who has been shaping remarkably well across country, is unable 4o compete at Christehurch, owing to au injury, while 11. E. Newton, one of the best performers iu New Zealand, has decided not to do much cross-country running, as he has his eyes on the quarter and half-mile flat championships at the X.Z.A.A. gathering.
