S. AFRICAN FLAG.

Senate's Suggestion Displeases Hertzog.

"UNION JACK DOMINANTS (Received 11 a.m.) CAPETOWN, June 27. The Senate carried the second reading of the Flag Bill, but in committee nu amendment was moved, making a new design. This gives the Union Jack and the two former Republican flags one quarter each, the remaining quarter to be occupied by four stars on an azure field, representing the four provinces in Hie Union. The Union Jack has the top left-hand corner. The Government's flag had the same arrangement on a small shield in the centre of the old Holland flag. The Government is in the minority in the Senate and General Hertzog has resisted the new design, declaring that the Union Jack had a position of domin ance and the Dutch would never accept it.

The Senate carried the amendment and the bill will now be referred to the Assembly for the lattcr's concurrence.
