DAIRYING INDUSTRY.
NATIONAL DAIRY ASSOCIATION
CONFERENCE AT B.OTORTJA.
IMPORTANT MATTERS TO BE
DISCUSSED.
Matters of national importance, in so far as they relate to the primary industries of the Dominion, are scheduled for discussion at the annual conference of the National Dairy Association of New Zealand, Limited, which is to be held at Rotorua this week. The tiiirty-third annual report, under the heading of experimental and research work, records with satisfaction the decision to establish an agricultural college, the creation of a department of scientific and industrial research, and hte continued good work oi the Hawera laboratory. Referring to the muchdebated subject of cream grading, it i≤ suggested that compulsory grading, already successfully applied to cream, might with equally good results benefit cheese manufacture through the grading of milk. The fact that the advance in herd testing has not been maintained is regarded as a matter for regret. The intention to oppose any attempt at tariff revision, placing increased duty on dairy factory requirements, is also indicated. Amongst numerous remits to be considered are some requesting the re-consti-tution of the Dairy Produce Board so that it shall consist only of producers' representatives. Others, again, urge compulsory cream grading in respect to cheese manufacture; and the need will be emphasised for a more vigorous Government roading policy, especially in farm areas. It will be recalled that this matter was recently brought forward at the conference of representatives of North Auckland dairy factories. The annual meeting of the association is scheduled to commence on Wednesday' morning. It will coincide with the opening of the Ro+orua show. On Wednesday evening the annual meeting of the New Zealand Co-operative Rennet Company will be held, while on Thursday morning Mr. W. M. Singleton, directo'r of the Dairy Division, will speak on matters affecting the dairy industry. On the same day, Mr. P. O. Veale, scientist to the federation of Taranaki cooperative dairy factories, and Mr. C H. Courtenay, secretary of the Eltham Cooperative Dairy Company, will speak, the former on "Factors Influencing the Efficiency of Dairy Factorise," and the latter on "Modern Mechanical Methods Applied to the Office Work of Dairv Companies." Mr. W. Grounds, chairman of the Dairy Produce Board, will address farmers on Friday morning. During the week the annual conference of the Federation of Herd Testing Associations will be held.
