The New Zealand cricketers opened the northern portion of their tour yesterday morning at Sunderland in a match -gainst Durham. There were 6000 spectators.
The visitors won the toss, and in their first innings scored 373 runs. When stumps were drawn the home side hr•" lost eight wickets for 111.
New Zealand's first three batsmen, Dempster, Blunt and Page, delighted the spectators. They made a sparkling 148 before luncheon. The first 64 were compiled in half an hour.
Dempster's century was made in 139 minutes. Altogether he was batting i 92 minutes and hit four sixes and 21 fours. He was caught at mid-on. Cleverly-timed leg strokes were the feature of his innings, and his cutting and driving "-ere also excellent. Durham fared badly against Henderson and Blunt. The former took four wickets for 33 and the latter two for 22. Details of the scores are:—
