DEVONPORT FERRY SERVICE.
THE NEW WHARVES. i ,^____ ) > VEHICLES TO MECHANICS' BAY, ? Speaking to shareholders in the Devonport Ferry Company at to-day's annual t meeting, the chairman of directors. > Hon. E. W. Alison, referred to the new • concrete wharf being constructed at * Devonport for passengers, vehicular and goods traffic. He stated that the estimated cost was £65,000, and it was expected the work would be finished by \ December next. A feature in connection with the pas- . sender portion of the new wharf, Mr. [ Alison added, which would be much appredated by the travelling public, was L that it would be completely covered in from the roadway at Victoria Road, thus ' enabling passengers to be under shelter \ to and from ferry steamers. The exist* ing landing stages would He superseded , by electrically controlled gangways 9ft ' Oin wide, by which much improved facilities for - embarkation and disembar- | kation of passengers would be given. ' The approach to the passenger wharf was well away from the vehicular and ' cargo wharf, thus obviating the danger , and confusion which would exist if these services were in close proximity. The ; bridge for the vehicular ferry landing ; was designed to accommodate heavy ' traffic, the existing system of supporting ' the outer end of the bridge upon a pontoon being dispensed with, and the outer end of the bridge being maintained at its; proper height by automatic electric- ' ally controlled gear. This form of construction was a marked improvement on the existing bridges, which were evidently designed to carry lighter types of vehicles than those now in use. The vehicular berth was located outside the passenger berths so as to avoid the crossing of vehicular and passenger services. A new vehicular ferry landing was to be constructed in Mechanics' Bay, and when this landing was completed the distance of the ferry trip for the vehicular ferries would be materially reducedIt was well that the replacement of the old wharf was not longer delayed as the old structure, built 44 years waa in an advanced state of d'eeav.
