BEAUTIFYING BAYSWATER.
THE COMMITTEE STARTS WORK.
5 Bayswater was a busy place on Satur--3 day afternoon, when the first working • bee of the recently-formed Beautifying • Committee was held. The scene of 1 operations was at the wharf entrance : to the suburb, and the streets were gaily : decorated with bunting. Fully one huni dred residents helped, and the Takapuna : Municipal Band played merry tunes. ! The president of the Progressive > Association, Mr. 0. Moller, in calling . upon his Worship hte Mayor of ; Takapuna, Mr. J. \V. Williamson, to plant the first tree, welcomed ■ him to Bayswater on behalf of the resi- • dents. He explained the objects of the , society, and thanked the Mayor for his practical sympathy with the cause. Bayswater felt that as things were at , present, it was extremely difficult for the council to find funds for the necessary ' works of the borough, and the only thing , remaining was for all residents to put ] their shoulders to tlie wurer and help things along. The Mayor, in reply, thanked the residents for the welcome, and said he was indeed proud to think he had such enthusiastic citizens to back him up in his duties. He hoped the movement would spread throughout the district, i Mr. Malcolm, secretary of the Parks I Committee, spoke in similar terms. To him was allotted the planting of the second tree. Mrs. F. E. K. Gaudin, president of the Bayswater Belroont Women's Society, planted the third. Then work was commenced. Altogether, over 100 shrubs were planted, rock gardens were made, and j future operations planned. During the j proceedings, afternoon tea was provided by the Bayswater-Belroont Women's Society, under Mrs. Gaudin. It is proposed to hold working bees every Saturday, each male resident pledging himself to give one Saturday afternoon in four, thus ensuring a good muster. Tree planting in the streets, cleaning up the j footpaths, beautifying of waste spaces, and the upkeep of parks, etc., are all to be undertaken bv tbis new society.
