CROWN COIN TAKES THE BIG STEEPLES. STEWARDS iTAKEi 10 HUIKAL HOIKoI WINS PETANE CROSS- ! COUNTRY EVENT l | >Dy Telocraph.—Special to "Star.*') I NAPIER, Saturday. The one-day winter meeting ot th< Napier Park Racing Club -ri/ held ir beautiful weather, before a large attend anee. The track wa? in excellent order The amount of £9390 wa.- passet through the totalizator, against th« Saturday total last year of £14.449 ! a decrease of fc.10.j9. Arataura Jumps WelL I I\n.ru= was the favourite tor the Ha. 1I Hurdles, from Pe?h«a and LomL-ardc . Arataura and Peneus soon established £ good lead, Peshwa and Great Day getting caught up ia the tapes and losing a loot' ground. Arataura, jumping' well gave Peneus no chance of catching him and won by ten. lengths. Peshwa cam, well Into third place, a fimiiar distant behind Peneus. Great Day and Sweei Heather "ore the only other- to finish. Paukaponga fell, and "all the others rar, off. It could hardly be described as a race. Arataura went awav right from the jump, and made the most of his 2Hb 3 advantage of Peneus. who couid make no impression. Arataura jumped well, except for getting too close to the stand jump, and Peneus aUo jrave a ;:ood display. Peshwa was unluekv. and he would have been well up. but for badly away. Great Da v. who was fourth, was a long way back. Fine Race in Petane Steeples. Betting in the Hack Steeples, in which Little River. Crow n Coin, Waioeka Jack and \ agabflnd were s.-ratched. was mainly confined to Hokioi. Merrv Singer and Woden, with money for ' Handy. Handy s et the pace, and throughout tiu, closely followed bv Merrv Sin-er. Wcden. and Hokioi. Entering the la-t circuit. Fairricid dropped out", and six furlon-s from home Merrv dinger went to the front, onlv to fall a't the next fence. This I*ft Handv i D charge trom Woden and Hokioi. and thev were so far ahead of the rest that thev would have had to- fall to lo«- the money. The trio kept in elo*e order al! the way. and Hokioi jumped the last trnj slightly ahead of Handv and Woden. In a tine race home, head* separated the three, in that order Fairueld was fourth. 100 vards awav followed by Good Mark and Rani Nmo. There wa« little between the three placed horse*, and Hokioi won or his merits. Inner Harbour All the Way. Bickers went for Inner Harbour and Nastori in the Hack Scurrv. There was some bumping at the start, in which High Heather got knocked right back and Essential was al-o squeezed out. Karutahi, Inner Harbour, Coot. Tom Byrne, and Nastori were the fir«t to show out, but Nastori, who was on the rails, 10-t her place in the first furlong. Inner Harbour led on the turn, from Karutahi. Coot. Tom Byrne, and Nastori. Coot challenged strongly in the run home, but Inner Harbour won bv a neck. The Engli-h colt. Greengrocer, four lengths away, came well into third place, just showing out from High Heather, who was followed by Nastori and Essentia!, together. The winner won practically all the way, and beat Coot on his merits. Greengrocer made a favourable impre*-=ioo. as he was not at all prominent early. He should win soon, and a similar remark applies to High Heather, who was in the earlier stages giving them all a start. Favourite Wins Over Tall Timber. C rown (. oin was made a t!> better favourite for the Napier Meenies than Bonny Rill, with Waioeka Jack next fancy. Waioeka .lack cleared away trom the start, but he had only got over the first fence and the stand double when he charged the wing of the next and fell. This left Kovno and Bonn-.- Rill in charge from Little River and Crown Coin. Crown Coin joined the leaders on the home turn, and went to the front at the seeond last fence. He came on. and jumped the last clear of the other pair, and won. pulling up. by two length- from Bonny Rill, who finished ahead of Kovno by a similar margin, after bein~ behind lisr at the last fence. Little River finished 100 yards away. Grown Coin was too good for the opposition, and he is an improved jumper since Wanganui. Bonny Rill had every chance. Kovno should be dangerous in hunters' events. Tameterangi Makes Amends. With Mint Leaf and Royal Diadem out of the race for gentleman riders. ! Brigadier Bill was the favourite from Radiate and Tameterangi. Tameterangi led ail the way. and although Perle de Leon came at him in the run home, he won comfortably bv two lengths. Brigadier Bill was four lengths | away, followed by Radiate. Serenade : and Blissfulness. The success .of T.ime- j terangi fully emphasised his bad luck at Otaki. He w.is not troubled at anv j sta **-_ ilr - J - Moms took the mount .'
oa him. Brigadier Bill, ridden by Mr. C. L. Bull, ran a goo«i race, but was not quite up to concert pitch, a- his fall at Wan-anni kept him ont of work fo- a fortnight. Good Effort by Huikai Kascal. who was scratched at 12.3* i pjn. on Friday, was the only one missia" from the Stewards' Sta'kes. Royal Diadem was the favourite, from Hathor, Mint Leaf, and Road Hog. At the *Urt Hathor was not too well away and Road Hog and Huikai settled do'wn in the lead, from Buoyant and Gaze. On the tarn Haikai slipped the field and turned tor home clear of Mint Leaf. Hathor. and Royal Diadem. Mint Leaf gradually drew up an d was level with Huikai a≤ they crossed the line, three lengths ahead or Royal Diadem. Hatiior uas a fair rourth. followed by Gaze and Othon. Huikai very nearly won outright, and stayed on a good deal better than hi* sprinting form suggested. Mint Leaf was in the rear wit a the race half over, xnd ffa ' tiiiisiiins much the stronsrer. The; ?ap he had to bridge over the last three furlongs was just too much for a. win outright. Koyai Diadem ran quite a! fair race. ' j Merle Proves Otaki Form Wronj. For the concluding event, the English j filly Piperenzo was a better favourite | than Merle, and there was backing for : Kilmezzo, Calluna got very badly off I and Heather Blend led out from Piper-' enzo and Grand National. Pipereozo j dear on the home tarn, bat here I Merle ran up and led into the straight.! sshe maintained her lead and won by. nearly two lengths from Toko, with <rrand National three-quarters of aj length away. Highway was fourth, I followed by Callona, Piperenzo and Kil- | mezzo. Merle, as ia the case of Tame-
J terangi proved her Otaki form wrong, and won welL The surprise of the race was the forward running of Toko, a five-year-old gelding by BLrkfuL He was" in the picture all the war. Grand National was responsible for "a creditable race and Highway was finishing well. Piperenzo I showed good speed, but failed to star I the distance. Later re-ults: — ! NAPIER STEEPI.ES of r.Osov..
