WRECK OF THE INDIAN HARBOUR.
"Had a lifeboat been lowered rt could never have lived in the seas which were breaking near the wrecked ship," said an officer of the L'nion Company's motorsbip Hauraki, this morning, when speaking of the ioss of the steamer, Indian Harbour at Point Garda, about 180 milee from San Francisco, several weeks ago. The Hauraki, which reached Auckland yesterday morning, was going from Vancouver to San Francisco to complete her present cargo when the ship's wireless operator picked up an S.O.S. call from the Indian Harbour. The distressed vessel reported that she had been driven ashore at Point Garda. and that high «a>as were pounding her on the rocks. At the time the di-t-ess palls were p;cked up the Hanraki was only eighteen miies from the scene of the wreck, and she at once made full speed to rentier assistance. On arrival at Point Garda a hard gale was blowing and the motorship was unable to do anything, except transmrt reports of the weather an<i the Indian Harbour's conditon to San Francisco. After standing by for nine hours the Hauraki waa relieved by a tug, which had been dispatched from a nearby portAs her services were not further required the Hauraki then went on to San Francisco. The crew of the Indian Harbour, numbering 27. were eventually rescued by coast guards, but the ship herself bemme a total wreck.
