ALL NIGHT LIGHTING.

' PROPOSED CHARGES. i ' BY WAITEMATA POWER BOARD. INSISTENT DEMAND FOR LONG ! SERVICES. The question of street lighting within the Waitemata Electric Power Board's area was discussed at this morning's meeting of the board. The resident engineer (Mr. F. J. H. Wilson) recommended that the rate for all-night lighting for a 100 candle-power bracket lamp be made £4 10/, less 12} per cent, or £3 IS/9 nett, on the condition that all the lights within the boundary of any particular local body be left on all night. On the other hand, should local bodies desire the extension of the street lighting hours from midnight to 1 a.m. only, he recommended that the rate be £4*IS/ ( £3 17/ nett). This should not involve the board in the erection of more equipment —they could not agree to supply some lights until midnight, and others until 1 a.m. at the rates quoted. The chairman (Mr. J. W. Harden): There is an insistent demand to have the lights after 12 o'clock. Mr. A. E. Greenslade moved an amendment that the board adopt one circuit for its street lighting, namely till 4 a.m., and that the charge be the same aa for midnight lighting at present, namely £3 15/ nett. They should give the local bodies the benefit of the alteration, he urged. It would be a good thing for the board to establish one system up till 4 a.m. Mr. G. Trevithick: Have we had them on long enough to know what the cost is? The engineer said the monthly returns were erratic as the lamps had not been operating for a long time, particularly on the Shore. His assumption that a charge for one extra lamp (3/9) would just cover renewals. The chairman raised a point of order at this stage. He pointed out that the engineer's proposals were merely recommendations, and a notice of motion was required. He did not desire to block the matter, however. It was eventually agreed that Mr. Greenslade, who held that the time switch system was unsatisfactory, should present a notice of motion on the lines proposed in his amendment at the next meeting of the board.
