Horror of Shipwreck In Typhoon
Off Manila.
SHARK-INFESTED SEA,
MANILA, June S,
Survivors of the wreck of the interisland steamer Negros, which foundered in a typhoon in the Philippines on May 28, arrived at Manila on board the. steamer Masbate.
They declare that the victims of the disaster were devoured by sharks while clinging to the wreckage, which is in opposition to the prior belief that they were drowned.
Eye-witnesses described how the sharks hovered close at hand while the ship foundered.
Immediately after the passengers had fought their way to pieces of the wreckage to which the victims lung, the sharks snatched them awav like flies.
The cries of the unfortunate people could be heard above the roar of the waves.
The belief has been advanced that a school of sharks was near when the ship foundered, and that, attracted by the sounds, they swam toward their prey.
One survivor, who was cast on top of some wreckage, described how he ate his clothes, which satisfied his hunger, and left no ill-effects.
