THE FIRST WIN.

FOR N.Z. CRICKETERS.

Sussex Defeated by Eight

Wickets.

SLOW BOWLERS DEADLY.

By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.)

(Received 9.30 a.m.)

LONDON, May 31

With their first victory within reach the New Zealanders were on toes, when the gaine against Sussex was resumed to-day. Their bowling and fielding were very kee'n, and ideal team work was shown.

Merritt and Blunt were the outstanding bowlers.

Arthur Gilligan threatened to defer victory and slogged dashingly. Hβ hit a sixer into a garden outside the ground, but Blunt with an innocent-looking googly cut short his career.

The match was really won in the first few overs, when A. H. Gilligan and Wensley were got cheaply. Blunt disposed of the tail-enders with a epell of deadly bowling. James' wicket-keeping was greatly admired.

Bernau and Allcott looked like wipin out the defict, till Bernau spooned one to mid-off. Then James was dismissed by a dazzling catch in the longfield.

The victory has delighted all cricket lovers, who admire the genuine sporting spirit of the visitors and their way of playing the game for the game's sake. Scores:— SUSSEX. To-day will be a day of rest for the Silver Feme, who will, to-morrow and Friday, play a two-day match against a side chosen from the cltib cricket conference. According to Mr. Sidney W. Coxon, a member of the Ealing Cricket Club, London, and who played in Auckland in the '80'b, and represented Auckland against Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago in 1884-1885, the Ealing Cricket Club has lent its ground for the match. The New Zealandera will be opposed by a powerful side, consisting almost entiroly of county amateurs. Mr. Coxon is greatly interested in New Zealand cricket, and is looking forward very keenly to seeing them at Ealing, where, on May 24, last year, the Ealing Club scored 236 for six wickets (declared) against M.C.C. 177. Of the 1884-85 Auckland eleven, C. S. Stafford, W. W. Robinson (captain), and S. W. Coxon are residing in England, J. Testro in Melbourne, and the remainder, excepting J. Gill, who has passed away, still reside in New Zealand. They are: Judee C. E. MacCormick, W. E. Barton. D. Lynch, G. P. Ewing, Ned Mills, W. B. Meldrum, and C. H. Osmond.
