EX-AUCKLANDER IN DURBAN.
CAPTAIX F. W. XORRIB HOKOCIEDI
An old name for himself abroad is Captain F. W. Korrie, who has joet retired fronT the post of senior dredging master .to the Durban Harbour Department, Sooth Africa. The son of Captain Q. g. Xorris, a name well-known m Auckland shipping circles, ho went to sea and served in several of the inter-colonial sailers trading between Auckland and Australia, such as the barque Lair* and others. In 1692 he joined the Durban Harbour Department, and retired a few weeks ago. the occasion being marked by the staff presenting him with a gold watch and purse and Mrs. X orris with a handbag. Making the presentations, Captain Stevens (the Tort captain), mentioned that Captain Xorris had known the port for forty years, and during that time he had seen tremendous changes, changes which he bad done his foil share in bringing about. When Captain Xorris started work there was onlr ten feet of water on the bar, and to-daV there was thirty-' -ven. Captain Xorrii had been in oomn nd first of the 2500ton suction dredge Nautilus and then of the larger Cetus. For twenty-one years he had been in charge of the Cetus. and during that period the vessel had dealt with the huge amount of some 45,000.000 tons of si>otL. Durban is to-day one of the most important shipping ports in the country, but when Captain Xorris first touched there in 188S on a small barque drawing 15 feet of water. she bumped ssvenl lime* crossing the bar. There were only two other vessels in harbour, a little steamer and a brigantina.
