WET WICKET.

ESSEX SCORES SOLIDLY

County Leads New Zealanders

on First Innings. MeGIRR GETS WICKETS. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 16. The weather was dull and cold, and threatening rain, when the match, Essex v. New Zealand, was resumed. The pitch was not seriously affected through yesterday's rain. The New Zealand attack was shared by Bernau and McGirr, but Blunt soon relieved Bernau, who, later, fielding midoff to McGirr, unfortunately missed Cutmore when the batsmen had made 26. Merritt caine on to bowl when tlie score had reached ninety without any further wicket falling. The bowling, with the exception of McGirr's, was erratic.

LONDON, May 16.

Seventy-four runs had been added in 40 minutes, when McGirr in one over dismissed Russell, and had Douglas and Morris taken in the slips, Dempster's' catches being superb.

Lowry accounted for O'Connor, whose 65 included nine fours. Rain suspended play for ten minutes. At lunch the score was 206 for four wickets, Cutmore and O'Connor being out, and the whole side was out at the tea adjournment for 373. Scores:— NEW ZEALAND. First Innings 289 ESSEX.—First Innings.
