CABLE RATES.
SUGGESTED ALTERATIONS. At the next meeting of the International Telegraph Conference, to be held at Washington early next summer, a proposal will be submitted by the British delegates to cut the ten letter cables code into two {.-roups of five letters wifh a view to obviating errors in transmission. In this connection a London writer s;iys: — "There would certainly be some advantage if the change were made, but there would also be some risks, chief of which is that tiie postal administration may seize the opportunity to raise their charges." Another subject which will come before the coniercee is the regulation which came into effect on November 1, by which in daily letters and week-end cables numbers, whether written in words or figures, may not exceed one-third of the number of chargeable L'xr words. This rule was passed at . the conference held in Paris two years ago, and it can only be modified at the next conference. * The Postal and Telegraph Committee of the London Chamber of Commerce has decided to protest against the regulation as being erroneous in principle, and will seek to secure lis modification at Washington. As very emphatic protests were made in this Dominion when the regulation was announced it is presunvd that New Zealand (. hambeis of Commerce will associate themselves with the representations of the Loudon organisation.
