SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

Among the many parties at Dixieland on Saturday night was a large one arranged by Misses M. Hawley and Elley, for some of the officers off the Mataroa. Amongst those present were Mrs. C. Nicholson, Mrs. T. Chamberlain, Mrs. Gordon Elley, Miss M. Rowley, Miss D. McCoy, Miss A. Colebrook, and Miss V. Jackson.

A merry little party took place at Mrs. T. Chamberlain's home in Remuera on Thursday night in honour of officers off the Mataroa, which is now, in port. Mrs. Chamberlain received the guests wearing a frock of black souple satin with scarlet trimmings. Amongst those present' were Mesdames C. Kelly, Turner, W. Dawn, Bigg, Buchan, Misses M. Hawley, M. and D. Elley, Abernethy, A. Colt-brook, S. Craig, and M. Long.

The luncheon talks given by different speakers at the Lyceum Club have always been a very successful feature, every seat is booked weeks ahead, and the members thoroughly enjoy the able discourses to which they are often treated. Next Thursday Professor Worley will have the place of honour and will speak on artificial silk, a subject in which every woman is interested, whether it be the price of stockings, which she hopes will be reduced, or the rise in garments to which she looks forward without any enthusiasm. Silk has become one of the indispensables of modern clothing, and the chance of the artificial material being successful will always be of inters est.

Mrs. A. Hammer gave a delightful ■bridge party on Wednesday evening at her residence in Omahu Road, as a farewell to Mrs. Harper Bell, who has been staying at Cargen and leaves shortly for Los Angeles to see her son. The hostess wore a black georgette frock embossed in white Ohenille flowers. Mrs. Harper Bell came in a navy crepe romaine jumper frock and navy hat to match. Amongst the guests were: Mrs. (Dr.) Buck, Mrs. J. Crisp, Mrs. G. Ferguson, Mrs. A. Bullock, Mrs. J. Tucker, Mrs. G. W. Hutchison, Mrs. Rough, Mrs. J. Couplan, Mrs. Gardiner, Mrs. Johnstone and Mrs. Oswin.

Mrs'. G. Ferguson, entertained a number of friends to bridge at her charming home in Burtvood Crescent, Eemuera, on Thursday afternoon to bid farewell to Mrs. Harper Bell, who is leaving for Los Angeles. The hostess received her guests in a flamingo pink georgette beaded in pastel shades. Mrs. Harper Bell, was wearing an ensemble suit of black panne velvet and gold and henna lame jumper, black felt hat and fox furs. Amongst the guests present weTe: Mrs. Hugh Fenton, Mrs. (Dr.) Buck, Mrs. A. Bullock, Mrs. A. Hammer, Mrs. J. Crisp, Mre. J. Tucker, Mrs. F. Brown, Mrs. A. Lewis, Mrs. H. C. McCoy, Miss Darling, Miss McGovern.
