KARANGAHAPE BUSINESS SOCIETY.
TO-DAY'S MEETING.
The fortnightly meeting of the Karangahape Read Business Promotion Society held to-day in the Holly Tea Rooms was well attended, the president, Mr. M. J. Bennett, occupying the chair.
The speaker of the day was Mr. W. E. indicated the scope of biology in its Auckland University, who addressed members on "Practical Applications of the Biological Sciences." Mr. McGregor indicated the scope of Biology in its relation to agriculture, forestry and fisheries. The effect of fungoid diseases and of insects upon crops and upon trees was to cause ' incalculable loss year by year to the community. It was the business of the biologist to study the life history of these pests in order that methods of control could be devised. He had, moreover, to etudy the complex series of relationships between one species and other. Nature had provided a very important balance in the struggle for existence and to disturb this balance for some economic purpose was often a very risky proceeding. The lecturer quoted many instances where new organisms had been introduced into a country for the purpose of combating some pest, but the effect of a fresh environment upon the introduced orglhism had been that it thrived unduly or altered its life methods so that loss rather than benefit had accrued. < At the conclusion of his address a hearty vote of thanks was accorded by acclamation. A vocal solo was contributed by Mrs. G. W. Menzies to an accompaniment played by Miss Asher.
