The man Israel Melchcr, who was charged with attempting to blackmail Harold Kubin, a wealthy pearl dealer end the prospective Conservative candidate for Wednesbury, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to imprisonment for nine months.
Melcher was recommended to mercy by Mr. Rubin. The defence acknowledged Mr. Rubin's magnanimity, and counsel laid stress on the fact that his honour and character were never assailed by Melcher.—(A. and N.Z. and Sydney "Sun. ,, ) The evidence in the case showed that Rubin's father", who had acquired a fortune in the Western Australian pearl trade, had sent Melcher to Shark Bay to buy pearls. Melcher said he had lived a lonely life there for six years, and that hie health broke down. The blackmail charge was that Melcher threatened to disclose that Rubin had been paying secret, commissions in the hope that he would ruin Rubra'e political career. It was also alleged by the prosecution that Melcher had retained papers appertaining to Rubin's business.
