FORERIC IN PORT. Loaded with 7500 tons of phosphate, the steamer Foreric arrived at Auckland from Nauru Island, this morning. She berthed at the King's wharf. The Foreric, which last visited Auckland on March 15 last, went from this poit to Westport for bunkers, thence proceeding to Qceair Island with a small quantity of coal. From Ocean Island she went to Nanru to load her present cargo, sailing thence for Auckland on April '2\L. . Fine weather was experienced to the islands, but a couple of days' fresh head winds delayed progress on tne return run. The Foreric is expected to sail on Saturday for Wangunui to tomplcte discharge. Thence she Will go to Westport for bunkers, and later will proceed to Makatea to load, another phosphate cargo. Captain G. Jones is still in command, and the officers' list is also unchanged. Messrs. Henderson and Macfarlane are the local agents. BRITISH BUILT MOTORSIIIPS. One regrettable phase of mutur ship development, so far as England is concerned, is that in the past it lias obviously been far more difficult fur British builder's :<> quote competitive prices for oil-engined vessels than for steamers when foreign orders are in question. It is well known says "The Motorship." that when the steam engine held sway the proportion of foreign-owned British-built craft was far greater than it is at ihe present time. Naturally, this is partly accounted for by the increased facilities for construction that has developed in foreign countries, but it has also been due to a certain extent to the preference of foreign owners for Contlnenti.il machinery, probably on account of price. It is, therefore, all the more gratifying to note that some of the motor ships recently ordered in the L'nited Kingdom are to sail under a foreign flag. Five large motor tankers are included in the recent batch of contracts, all for American owners. Two cargo and passenger liners, al.-so to sail under the American flag, are in hand in a British yard, whilst there are several motor ships for Norwegian owners being built.
