STUDENTS AT PLAY.

Of the tlpui-amls who have made holiday this Faster in Auckland none have enjoved them<elvc> more than the students who assembled for the L niversity tournament. From Friday until Monday night the weather was perfect, and it is doubtful if Auckland is ever more luvelv than it m such still, bright Faster days, the brightness of everything was in keeping with the spirit of youth. For Auckland I nn ersity circles this is a special occasion; for the first time the tournament is bein? held with the new College building as head~quarters. Previously Auckland professors and students have had to apologise for their Cullesre premises; this year they can point with pride to an improvement worthy of the city. The tournament itself has been very successful. It has become a much wider institution than was originally planned. In sports ahi eh standard has been set, and at such a gathering as yesterdays on the Domain the value of the Iniversity as a recruiting ground for amateur athletics can be- plainly seen. The greatest value of the tournament, however, lies in the mingling of students from the different centres. Prejudices are broken down, minds enlarged, and friendships formed. The great success of this year's gathering makes it all the more regrettable that the debating contest should have beeu marred by stupid horseplay and "humour.'' This sort of thins; is not funn}, and it is not '"good sport."' That students should stoop to making things difficult for contestants in a debate, when they would not dream of interfering with runners or tennis players, is puzzling. These tournaments are excellent advertisements for L niversity hie—save at such moments of inconsiderate buffoonery.
