I But for a wind across tho courts, almost | perfect weather conditions would have irrev.iiled for tiie second day of the South Island hard court tennis tournament. The linals were reached in the men's singles championship and the ladies' singles charn- . pionsiiip. There were two surprises. D. C. Johnston (Timaru) bent K. J. Walker | in the second round of the men's singles | championship, G—4. 6—J, and Johnston ' beat C. in the semi-tinal of the same event, 7—•">, G—2. Johnston overpowered his opponent by the terrific force of his accurate base-line shots, which were all taken from the rising ball. To-morrow Johnston will meet T. W. Patterson in the tinal. Patterson defeated I. A. Seay in the tir.-t semi-tinal, 5—S, G—3, o—3.
