WHEEL AND TRACK NOTES.
(By ORION.)
FIXTURES. April 10—Riverton R.C. Annual (two events). April I'd—Metropolitan Trotting Club. April UO—Westland Racing Club (two events). April 23—Ashburtoa Trotting Club. May T —Cambridge Trotting Club. June IS, —Auckland Trotting Club. The Mangere owner-trainer, T. Poe, did not win a race with any of liis team at Hawera. Both Koez and Peterson finished third, which would bring in enough to pay boat fares.
The WelUford owner, G. Williams, had no luck with his team, comprising Bell Dial. Gold Dial, Nellie Bramlev, and Xgatira, at either Wanganui or Hawera, and the trip would be a fairly expensive one to him.
G. Robertson had no luck with his pair, Horizon and Admiral Hood, at Hawera. Their last workout at Epsom before going away was not impressive, and they did not carry much money in their engagements.
S. Groat is still trying to break the run of outs down against his team this season. Placed performances with Profiteer and Araroa were his share of the spoils at Hawera. "When he gets a win outright no one will begrudge him tile
Vallamont, who brought off a big surprise in the Trial Handicap at Hawera yesterday, went a good race at Wanganui in the race won by Aburbanya, Vallamont, on that occasion, finished second, and should not have been neglected in the betting yesterday.
Ihe defeat of Bridget fialindo at Addington on Saturday would be costly to her owner. The mare was reported to be going great guns in her work for W. Tomkinson. She did not keep her backers in suspense long, as she broke up badly in the first half-mile and was counted out.
The two-year-old Enawah, who created &iuh a good impression when she won the Improvers' Handicap at Wanganui was well beaten in her engagements at Hawera. For a juvenile she was set a severe task, and her failures are not likely to lose her any admirers for the Great Xorthern Derbv in June.
After running third in the Opunake Handicap from Itj yards behind, yesterday at Hawera, Tranipfast came out in the next race and beat a field of pacers handsomely. His good run in tho previous race prepared backers for his win, and they made him second favourite.
Peter McDonald and Direct Morning
uore not <i success on the WanganuiHawera trip, and it is likely J. Shaw will not bring Peter McDonald back with him. He will keep Direct Morning going. also Jewel Pointer and Aniari®, who will be prepared for the winter meetiu" of the Auckland Trotting Club.
frampfast lias long been recogni-ed ■is a speedy trotter, but in the past he has. through failing to leave the mark right, invariably let his supporters down. However, at Hawera yesterdav, he was on his best behaviour and succeeded in winning the Kaponga Handicap, beating among others a good pacer in Loch Moigh.
In The Shrew Mr. J. H. Lloyd has a useful mare, and one who gets a fair share of the stakes she competes for. A few weeks back she won the Manawatu C'up. and 011 Saturday added the Hawera Cup to her credit. As she had only to eto 4.37 4-5 to win, lier trainer. \\. Head, should have some more pood drives behind Iter. Head also trains Karma, who won a double, so that the Hawera meeting will have plea-ant memories for him.
•In the Wanganui Trotting C'up, just over a week ago, the chestnut pacer Karma was going great guns half a mile from home when he got interfered with through Great Actress skipping in front of him. Despite this Karma, who lost considerable ground, finished fifth, and it seemed that he would have been close to winning but for the interference. At Hawera 011 Saturday and again yesterday Karma won, and should be heard of again.
VThon located at Mangere F. Monk was always regarded as one of the few who made trotting pay, and anything he stepped out in a race was alwavs vvorihy of support. Since he took up his residence at Kaikoura he has been equally successful, and at Hawera 011 Saturday lie produced a decent sort of maiden in Aorangi. Handicapped on •'?.44 Aoran<ri went 3.33, which was setting the backmarkers a task, and it wa« m>t surprising to find they were unsighted on the trip.
Although it was the general opinion that tho strong contingent of Auckland horses competing at the Hawera meeting would get a good portion of the -take money distributed at the gathering. the only winner to come from this end was An=elm. who won the President's Handicap on Saturday. Anselm gave away starts ranging tip to 150 yards, and in covering the two miles in 4.31 was responsible for a fine performance. and it is clear the son of Nut Ansel is as good now as ever he W;\i.
The performance of Escapade in winning tlie Easter Handicap at Addington on Saturday and beating a field of select pacers, is the best registered by a straight-out trotter in the Dominion. The daughter of Nelson Bingen was always with the leaders, and though she Went past the judge at a hreak and had to survive a protest on that score, the judicial committee did not consider it affected the result, and allowed ■ the itidne's placing to stand. A meeting between Peterwah and Escapade will create considerable interest, as thev are wonderful trotter*
