MYSTERIOUS ODOUR.
ON PARAWA! RACECOURSE. D® ESTER NOT RESPONSIBLE. MEDICAL OFFICER REPORTS. (By Tclrprsrh.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES. this day. During the seventh race at the trotting meeting at Farawai, there was noticed a strong odour that caused many people to leave the course. It was alleged that it came from a digester situated near the course, but from investigations made by the Health Department it apparently was not so, and the cause remains unknown. The matter was ventilated at the Thames County Council meeting last Thursday, when the owner of the premises applied for registration. Dr. Mercer, medical officer of health, stated that he visited the works on April 12, and he recommended that the council grant provisional registration for sis months while the owner carried out alterations. Inspector McLeod also visited the works, and he was informed that they ceased operation the afternoon before the trots. The digesters' contents had been drawn off and limed. It was alleged that the odour came from these premises, but he could find no cause. Registration was granted in terms of the report. Meanwhile everyone is curious to know where the odour, which was noticeable all over the course, came from.
