MOHAMMEDAN FESTIVAL.

I CELEBRATION IN FIJI i j A DISTURBING EL KM EXT. iFrom Our Own O.irrespi-,1,,1,.,,, , | St'VA. April M. On Monday la-t week the big Mohammedan festival of Id-uI-Fitr was eel-'-! brated with all due enthusiasm at I Toorak Mosque. Indians came from manv | miles around and from all parts of il„> i country. After the usual month's fast, the greatest fervour prevailed, without any signs of fighting with the Hindu crowd. Special services were held. Hafiz Musa Mohammed, a recent arrival, was able to recite all the Koran from beginning to end. a remarkable fen' i ' memory. After the prayers aj ] | addresses, there was much feasting al over the district, the Indians simplv gorging themselves until they could not walk. A special feature of the main address was a reference to the recent vituperous ravings of a Hindu missionary against both the Muslims and the whites. The Mohammedans were urged to be patient and wait..and not retaliate. It is evident that if thilately imported Hindu enthusiast does not cease his revilings. there will be trouble, and on this occasion the whites will ha\e the heftx - support of the Mohammedans who are by far the most warlike of the two races. However, it is to be hoped that wise cotisels will prevail.
