A.R.C EASTER MEETING.

SECOND DAY'S RACING.

hm; ins the victoria handicap. autumn steeples won by glenotus. Beautiful weather again favoured the Auckland Racing Club for the concluding day of their autumn meeting at Ellerslie to-day. There was a very large attendance and the course was in excellent order. The enclosures were looking at their best and the beautiful lawns and beds of autumn flowers made a most pleasing picture. The fields were good throughout; in fact, the acceptors for the Nelson Handicap, with which the programme opened, were so numerous that it had to be run in two divisions, making eight races. The Autumn Handicap was the principal flat race of the day. This was formerly known as the St. George Handicap, and when first instituted in 1874, was a mile and a-half. In 1890 the distance was reduced to a mile and a-quarter, but nine years later the mile and a-half was reverted to and it has been the same since then. Income, who figured on the card to-day won it in 1922, and also last year. The St. Leger Stakes, one of the few remaining classic events in New Zealand this seaon, has been won by some three-year-olds that have made turf history in New Zealand and Australia. Desert Gold annexed it in 1916, the year it was first instituted, while during recent years the names of Rapine and Ballymena figure as winners. To-day, Commendation the winner of the New Zealand Derby, Great Northern Derby and New Zealand St. Leger Stakes, is among those engaged.
