INTEK-'VARSITY RACE. VICTORIA COI.LKCK WIN EASILY. Tlie first inter-varsity rowing race held in conjunction with the Lnivorsity Tournament was rowed on the harbour on Saturday afternoon. The competing crews were the Victoria University ('ollcjio ami the Auckland I'niversity Collpjip. Tlic event attracted .a lot of interest, and special launches following the race were crowded with spectators. The wind was stronjj from tho south, and with the title on the flood a nasty sea was raised. At p.m. the starter, Mr. E. Buckler, sent the crews away, but both four made heavy weather of it, and off Judges' Bay the Auckland four swamped. The crew was promptly picked up by the starter's launch Olivenc, and towed to the boatshed. The Victoria College crew also were waterlogged, but were able to paddle ashore. A fresh start was made at 5 p.m., when the course was altered from Orakei Point to Campbell's Point. The crews were: — Victoria College.—D. Gray (stroke), lOst 131b, J. Platt-Mills (3*), 12st (Jib. F. Crease (2), list 81b. F. Mullins (1), list 21b, 11. McCarthy (cox). Auckland University.—\V. J. Lowe (stroke), list 71b, L. Brooker (3)-, 12st 81b, C. T. Keecan (3), list 81b, C. U. Hunt (1)', list, L. Fearon (cox). At 5.10 p.m. the starter sent the crews away to an even start. Both crews struck at 32 to the minute, and remained on even terms for the first two hundred yards. Victoria College then started to forgo ahead, and entered Hobson Bay with a lead of a quarter length. Oil" Point Resolution Victoria College had increased to a six lengths lead, and although their work was not so polished as the Aucklanders, they had a big lift and drive that told. Off Judges' Bay opening Auckland livened up, but the position was hopeless, and Victoria College went away to win comfortably by five lengths. Time 9m 435.
