THE OLD "STONE JUG."

AND CAMPING GROUND.

PROPOSAL BY A.A.A.

REQUEST TO CITY COUNCIL.

A camping ground for motorists'. With the old "Stone Jug," renovated to look like an old English inn, just picture it, surrounded by ten acres of perfectly good land. That is what the Auckland Automobile Association wish to see some day as a camping ground for its members. When the matter of camping grounds for motorists cropped up at last night's meeting of the AAA., the secretary, Mr. G. W. Hutchin-on, reported that a committee recently waited upon the Mayor (Mr. George Baildon) about the subject. Mr. Baildon was very favourable, and suggested several sites. It had been suggested that the Parks Committee of the City Council and representatives of the council of the Automobile Association should discuss the matter. Several sites had been spoken of. There was a site near Gillies Avenue, one on Mount Hobson, and another in the Western Springs area, surrounding the building known as the old "Stone Jug." This had been inspected and found most suitable for the purpose. If the City Council would allocate ten acres of land there, the old building could be preserved by renovating it and making it into a roadside inn such as was to be seen in England. Mr. Hutchinson thought that it could be converted into attractive tearooms where campers who did not desire to cook their own meals could get them from the old "Stone Jug." The committee recommended this site as the best and further recommended that a request be made to the City Council to allocate ten acres of its land to carry out the project. Mr. J. B. King: Is there any shelter there ? Mr. Hutchinson: No, but there is very little at the other sites. Without further discussion it was resolved to immediately forward the request to the City Council in time for this evening's meeting.
