Deta;'s of the fatality which occurred !in the Hooker Valley, about twelve miles from the Mount Cook Hermitaze. came to hand late last night. The victime was Mr». John Condon, of Mahi- , taki. South Westland. She was a-bout oO years of age. In company with her I husband, a younz man named Addison. ! and Guide Bannister, she left Waiho on Wednesday to make a traverse of the Copeland Pass to the Hermitaze. They ! camped for two days a: Douglas Rock and crossed the pass safely on Fridav. When half-way down "the Hooker j Valley Mrs. Condon slipped and fell. ■ She apparently suffered no immediate • 111-effect", hut before they had proceeded far she displayed sizns of weak- "•'-■■- and after hein? informed ' that . they had some distance to go to the I nearest hut she collapsed. In the meani time the party had been overtaken bv i a Minding snowstorm. | It was decided that Messrs. Bannister and Addison, who is a schoolmaster at Rruce Bay. should proceed to the hut for blankets, while Mr. Condon and his wife sheltered as best they could. The hut was only a mile distant, but it took the men two hours to make the journey and return in the face of the blizzard, which is described as one of j the worst experienced in the Hooker Valley. Mr?. Condon was then dead. Every effort was made to restore her, I and she was treated cnntiauallv for ' two hours, but they wpre ur.able to ' hrinz her round.
