i he occupation of Shanghai by the R.eds, wHicii was achieved without a shot having been fired, through the Shangtung general caving in, was followed by serious rioting in the native city. Several shots were fired in the direction of the International settlements, and a section of the Durhams was fired on by rioters, but no hring was engaged in by the defensive forces. The position .s seated by latest advices to be very grave while on the contrary. official circles see in the triumph of the Cantonese a hope for the setting up of stable government and unhampered trading conditions.
