FLOUR AND POTATOES.

That sauce for the goose may not ahniT k be an acceptable sauce for the gander is mad* plain by the outcry from certain people in the South, not at all representative of the great body of South Island farmers, who are desirota that Australian flour shall l>e kepi out of Xew Zealand, while New Zealand potatoes must be admitted into Australia. The Government of the country is being asked to do a great deal for the farmers in Canterbury by way of protection. and there is already a feeling of half humorous resentment invading the minds of Northern farmers. The produce committee of the Canterbury t hamber of Commerce became alarmed, and passed the following resolution, "That a telegram be sent to the acting Prime Minister expressing the consternation felt ia South Canterbury at the embargo imposed by the Commonwealth Government on New Zealand potatoes, and that the New Zealand Government be urged to make urgent and strong representations to the Federal Government requesting that it should at least modify the arbitrary action taken: and that a copy of the resolution be telegraphed to the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce with a request for its immediate support."' The terminology ol the resolution is. to say the least of it, ene> getic. and one wonders, in view of the championship of protection in regard to flour, how it will reconcile that principle to potatoes. Meantime consumers in other part- of the Dominion are wondering whether or not a special legislative providence is looking after the Canto bury farmer, just as such a providence is said to watch over the sailor, when he. and perhap* they also, are "far, far at sea."'
