THE UNIVERSITY ACT.
PROTEST BY N.Z. COUNCIL.
CLAIM FOR FULLER CONSULTATION
Considerable discussion ensued at yesterday's meeting of the X.Z. University College Council upon a motion by Prof. Hunter, "That the Minister of Education be advised that the University Council is very dissatisfied with the way in which it was consulted in regard to the University Amendment Act. 1926; and that the numerous errors and omissions in the amending Act show clearly the need of thorough expert examination before University legislation is passed."
The matter was debated in committee. and eventually it was resolved. "That the ilinister of Education be informed that in the opinion of the University Council, many errors and omissions in the emendin? Act might have been avoided if T he University Colleges had been more fullv consulted."
It wa= also resolved, on the motion of Professor T. A. Hunter, "That the Wellington standing committee be authorised to obtain an amendment of the University Act that will give to the University Council power to recognise or to refuse to recognise courses in the constituent colleges."
The chancellor announced that the dinner of the Haydon Essay Prize this year was G. H. Risnall, of Auckland University College, the only entrant.
