NGRTHCOTE LOAN WORKS.

CONCRETING QUEEN STREET. PROGRESS OF PRELIMINARY WORK. COST OF BELLE VUE AVENUE. Excellent progress is being made with the work preliminary to the paving in '"• r.crete of the main road at Xorthcote, from the wharf to the war memorial, a length of a mile. The engineer, Mr. A. Greville Walker, f last evening intimated to the Borough I ("iincil that excavation work was well | in hand between Kodney Road and Clarence Street. Gas and water mains had boi-n removed from the carriageway, and the ■■team shovel was thereby enabled to make much better progress. Excavation of the shoulders would be continued as soon as the gas main was removed. A considerable amount of fillins had been deposited on the western side of Queen Street and Denby Gully. Preliminary arrangements had been made for the renewal oj the existing culvert at Denby Gully, and the work would be put in hand at the earliest opportunity. A length of new six-inch water main had beer, laid betwen Grenville Road and Stafford Road, and was temporarily connected on the 11th inst. Considerable delay was occasioned with valves on the main supply line not closing properly. This was considered to be due to deposit from the pipes. The waterworks engineer deserved g;eat credit for the manner in which the trouble had been handled. To date a total of 2430 lineal feet of nine-inch storm-water drains had been laid. Special instructions had been issued to the contractor to ensure the proper consolidation of the pipe trenches. The engineer estimated the cost of the work of improvements to Belle Vue Avenue at £1900. This allowed for IS feet of scoria carriageway, and nine feet footpaths on both sides, but no provision for tarring or kerbing and channelling. Consideration was deferred.
