The citations ol Provincial Councils, which arc foujrbt on the same voters* roll as the Assembly elections, arc progressing. and while the duel between the Nationalists and the South African }«artv in the rural areas shows no decisive trend, the Labourites have suffered severely, losing ten scats to the South African party. and being practically wiped out in Natal: while a number of so-called Lndejiendents. who have generally supported the Government, hav® lost their seats. On the whole, the present position has been maintained in the rural constituencies, but the urban centres, where ' Labour is naturally strongest, show a i definite set against the Government, with the exception of Witwatersrand Voters hav <■ appeared ajiathetic. A feature of the campaign has been the unusual appearance of Cabinet Ministers in the fray, showing the importance attached to ibe iTsult by the < GovernI ment.
