THE OTLER SIDE.
Your correspondent "Britisher"' hat touched on a few home truths in his letter in Wednesday's ".Star." Butter is the foundstion of practically all wealth and industry in Auckland. There ie not the slight««t doubt the dullness and pessimism now so manifest in Auckland arc solely caused by the state of the butter industry. It is also equally manifest that the dairying industry is in its present state on account of the Government practising a cruel farce in reversing its election slogan of "less Government in business. 1 ' Never, I venture to state, bate we bad more Government in business. Arc to see bard times—and unemployment is only one of U» evidences of tbe hardness of the times—fostered by a Government based on democratic principles? Surely it is time somebody of weight in tbe community took off the 'mask from tbe present Government and in plain words stated facts instead of talking platitudes and, in a way, whistling in tbe dark? All is not well, and will be worse, and tboaa who are telling us that all will «oon be well -gain know this better than any others in tba country. Undoubtedly work is* tbe only cuts for the present pains of tbe country, but wha will work for nothing? And witb incomes cat off how can would-l»e-employers launch out in works? Even allowing for cxocptional circumstances arising out of tbe recent strike in England, tbere can be no doubt control il tbe cause of the present unfortunate state of tbe British market. "Britisher' states tba case in bonest words. Actually the unvarnished truth ia that the products of dairy farmers labour and their capital are banded to the State. Named Bolshevism, tbis sound* disgraceful, but the same state of affair* under title "Control" appears to have respectability given to it. Let the representative® of the people undo the tangle tbey have made of tbe dairy community's business* at once end cease meddling with business before it is too late. Lost markets are hard to recover and starvation stalks abroad in the meantime. Tht Control Board's functions should cease whra it has established economical collection of butter at ports where it may be lifted in larga enough quantities to shipping tha ■wasted time of collecting small cargoes at scattered ports. Having thus enabled a reduction in freight to }>e secured, let the Board's duties cease and the products U- sold in accordance with tbe rules of established comANOTHER BRITISHER.
