Notwithstanding the many advantages from the cultivation of leguminous crops, many farmers do not seem to realise the importance of their use ih relation to agriculture.

Phosphatic manures are, on the whole, beneficial beyond doubt, and their application is to be particularly recommended.

The winter feeding of hay from a good topdressed pasture together with roots is a sure method of raising the fertility and introducing grass seeds on to bare places. This should not be done on one spot, but the hay should be distributed across the field, so that the beneficial effects will be spread over the whole of it. Exception can be made in the case, of patches which are infested with grass grub.

As the spring advances and grass becomes plentiful, every endeavour should be made to keep it in a succulent condition by means of careful grazing so that the best results may be obtained and prolonged. The luxuriant early summfer growth soon becomes rank and unpalatable through insufficient stocking. Of late years the area devoted to agriculture in Uruguay has greatly increased, and there are now over 2,000,000 acres under cultivation in what used to be considered a purely pastoral country.
