UNEMPLOYED MEETING.
A SIGNIFICANT DATE. < COUNCIL DECLINES REQUEST. On the order paper at a meeting of the Auckland City Council last evening appeared an application on behalf of the Auckland Trades and Labour Council asking for the use of the old market site on February 23, for the purpose of holding a meeting in regard to unemployment. It was proposed to hold a procession up Queen Street to the Civic Square, where a mass meeting would be addressed by selected speakers. Mr. M. J. Bennett said that the choice of the particular day was very bad taste in view of the Royal visit. * Mr. E. J. Phelan said that a demonstration was regarded very seriously by the unemployed, and it was proposed to have it to impress upon the Government the seriousness of the position. The request was declined, the Mayor remarking that the following Saturday afternoon might be suitable for the meeting. The Tramways and Water Committee reported to the Council that instructions had been given to the tramways engineer and city engineer, to provide employment to as many men as possible.
