WORK OF MEW COUNCIL. OUTLINE BY CHAIRMAN. (By Telegraph.—Press Association » WELLINGTON, this day. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research met to-day. The chairman, Mr. (t. Shirteliffe, said that since the last meeting the main questions which had arisen had been those relating to policy. A clearer view was emerging as to the main lines of action. Members of the council had had an opportunity of discussing these questions with the Minister of Agriculture, the Dairy Board, and the new Agricultural College Council, and he was hopeful that an immediate co-ordinated attack might be launched 011 dairy and other problems of urgent economic importance. He outlined the progress being made in regard to attacking various noxious weeds and other researches in connection with the improvements of pastures and soil, and the breeding of seeds and plants; also mammitis and other stock diseases. Reports had been placed by several committees before members on standardisation, and on co-ordination with the New Zealand Institute of Researches, into the use of wheat flour for baking, fisheries, fruit, and tree propagation.
After a discussion with the Department of Industries and Commerce, steps were being taken to formulate proposals by which assistance might be given to researches into manufacture and industrial problems. Cabinet had approved of the council's recommendations for the re-organisation and better equipment of the Aleteorological Department. An intertesting investigation into the influence of upper air currents for forecasting and aviation was in progress at Sockburn Aerodrome.
